Queer Display’s
Mardi Gras Film Festival
is always a highlight of one’s Mardi Gras diary, because who willn’t love the chance to sit back with a few popcorn and (finally) see our very own communities and stories projected on silver screen?!

We’ve trawled through program of 120 films (54 feature-length and 66 short movies across 70 periods) to carry you all of our very top picks. They can be varied and comprehensive, funny and going, entertaining and enlightening, therefore we think you’ll love all of them.

  1. Zen when you look at the Ice Rift

Italy

Zen into the Ice Crack

follows 16-year-old Zen, apparently ‘the just lady’ on local ice hockey staff, as they battle with intimidation and checking out their own identification. The tense soundtrack and spectacular visuals merge in really effective ways to generate a visceral feeling of the misunderstandings and isolation of sex dysphoria, expanding upwards, and need.

The film tackles these themes head-on, with aggression. The icy setting also brings a welcome differ from the Mardi Gras temperature.

  1. Chedang and Apple

Philippines

Thelma and Louise

is regarded as my favourite films. Thus, how can you improve on a film like

Thelma and Louise?

By making it about a 66-year-old lady who is only come-out, and her companion who’s just take off the woman abusive husband’s mind, clearly.

This humorous street movie stars two former charm queens as Chedang and Apple, and employs them because they search for Chedang’s previous lover, with Apple’s partner’s head in a Louis Vuitton bag. Honestly.

  1. 1985

American

This breathtaking and sparse movie is actually a heavy indication of many darkest times for our communities. The movie is scheduled within its titular 12 months and comes after Adrian’s return from New York to his traditional Tx family members for xmas, for just what is probable the past time: Adrian has actually HELPS.

The black and white film captures the shadowy character of these moments – the stilted talks Adrian has together with his family members, the silences being heavy with meaning, as well as the breaks in crumbling interactions. Tales concerning HIV/AIDS epidemic are usually usual at LGBTQ film festivals, but this award-winning film is actually a stand out.

  1. Leitis in Waiting

Tonga

From the staff that developed

Kumu Hina

, a favourite from Mardi Gras movie Festival 2015,

Leitis in Waiting

is a documentary about leitis, Tonga’s indigenous transgender ladies: their particular society, and their battles for esteem.

These women have usually used a significant location inside the Tongan society, but current influxes of foreign evangelism have generated an increase in conservatism and discrimination. The film assessment, accompanied by a Q&A with among movie’s topics, Joey Joleen Mataele, isn’t are skipped.

  1. Two within the Bush: The Love Story

USA

Most rom-coms in this world is generally summarised with all the soon after synopsis:
“Boy meets girl. Female does not like man. Boy harasses woman. Woman inexplicably comes crazy.”

Therefore I love this particular film flips the script into: “woman becomes work employed by a Dominatrix. Woman falls crazy about Dominatrix

and

her sweetheart. Stores and whips get excited about a consensual manner.”

This film deals with bisexuality, kink and polyamory in an intelligent and amusing way, I am also very here for this combo.
